Would Your Rotary Club Like to Partner in a Worthwhile Global Grant Project?
District 6900 Rotary Foundation Grant Chair Anne Glenn has set a goal of every club in our district participating in a global grant project.
The Rotary Club of North Atlanta invites you to join in our exciting new project to cost effectively prevent spina bifida and other related birth defects in high risk pregnancies in Ethiopia.
A box of 100 tablets of high dose Vitamin B9 (folic acid) can be delivered to Ethiopia for about 60 cents. In partnership with the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa West, these tablets are distributed to mothers who have previously had a pregnancy affected by one of these largely preventable profound birth defects. We are on track to reach our goal of 1850 mothers in the first year of our project, but need your help to reach many more, and sustain the project through its 5 year goal.
Here are easy ways to participate:
A club in D6900 may participate by sending a check to The Rotary Foundation's Annual Fund - Share.
Do not indicate on the check or transmission form that this contribution is for a global grant.
https://my.rotary.org/document/contribution-form-rotary-foundation
Do send a copy of the check and/or transmission form to: Ralph Peeler, MD
rdpiiimd@comcast.net
and indicate on the check or form that this contribution is intended for the Ethiopia Spina Bifida Prevention Project.
District 6900 will match your contribution, using District Designated Funds (DDF), and designate the total (matched) contribution to the global grant. Only DDF is matched by the Rotary Foundation (at 80%), so it is very important to follow this procedure to obtain maximum matching funds for the project.
Your club will receive credit for your contribution to The Rotary Foundation, and Paul Harris points may be attributed to individual donors by the club's foundation chair.
The financial participation amount is up to you, depending on club size and resources.
Rotary clubs outside District 6900 should contact one of the individuals listed below:
For questions, please contact Ralph Peeler, MD at 404-932-3026 (rdpiiimd@comcast.net) or Jon Yaeger at 404-610-9386 (jonathan.yaeger@gmail.com)
An individual or non-Rotary organization may contribute by sending a (501c tax deductible) check to:
The Rotary Club of North Atlanta Foundation
c/o Nathan Aberson, Treasurer
Ajax Capital Advisors, Inc.
1 Concourse Parkway NE
Suite 800

For in depth information on the worldwide effort to prevent spina bifida and related birth defects, please visit (and enroll for free!) in the Spina Bifida Prevention Forum administered by Jon Yaeger at https://sbf‐forum.org
Our project was featured in the Rotary Magazine, January 2024 issue:

It is also described in the Rotary Showcase:
In May, 2023 the World Health Assembly, with the support of many philanthropic and professional organizations, passed Resolution WHA76.19 calling for 'Accelerating efforts for preventing micronutrient deficiencies, spina bifida, and other neural tube defects through safe and effective food fortification'

The high risk prevention project in Ethiopia has served not only to prevent devastating birth defects, but also to raise awareness within Rotary and beyond of the tremendous opportunity to have a positive impact on child mortality and disability across the globe. We would welcome other club's involvement in this or similar projects.
If your club would like a presentation about the role of folic acid in the prevention of birth defects for a regular club meeting, contact Ralph Peeler MD at the email address above.
