The Rotary Club of Addis Ababa West, in collaboration with the Rotary Clubs of Coppell, North Atlanta, and Raleigh, and Rotary International, in conjunction with the Reach Another Foundation, have undertaken high-risk prevention program in two hospitals in Addis Ababa.

In brief, the project will provide high dosage folic acid pills to mothers in Ethiopia who have had a child with an NTD, to reduce the incidence of NTDs (these patients are a at a 10X greater risk of having a successive child with an NTD without the intervention). In this pilot project, women will be encouraged to take one 5 mg. folic acid tablet daily for a period of one year. If successful, the plan and goal of the project is to continue the intervention for four more years.

Attached are copies of the project description and the approved application for Global Grant GG2240039.

Folic acid pills for the prevention of spina bifida and other neural tube defects were delivered to St. Peter's Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The pills are intended for distribution to patients at high risk for giving birth to a child with the aforementioned birth defects, as part of a joint Rotary Global Grant Project (see the High Risk Project section under the Rotary Forum for additional information).
