Bombing children's hospitals - Communication

July 10, 2024

Dear Members of GAPSBiF,

Before yesterday and a few hours after a tragic Russian attack on the main children’s hospital of Ukraine, we sent to you a note and a request. Since then, there has been a UN Security Council meeting and a Declaration of the European Academy of Paediatrics condemning this barbarity.

Presently, I wish to call your attention that in response to our previous note which was sent to over 1,000 international colleagues of OMNI-Net, there have been forwarded useful suggestions and donations made directly to the charity funds of the bombed facility and some to OMNI-Net.

I like to call attention to a few flaws of yesterday’s communication and some additional news and observations.

We do not know who are the donors to either of the charity funds (the bombed hospital Okhmatdyt – or OMNI-Net), unless the donors identify themselves. Obviously, we encourage them to do so for we are grateful for any degree of generosity and wish to thank them.

Our representative to GAPSBiF Miss Diana Akhmedzhanova informed us of a dialog between GAPSBiF members in the WhatsApp system of which we are not members. Our intent was for members of GAPSBiF to communicate with OMNI-Net directly.

Finally, we find that GAPSBiF, although it does not have a status of an organization, it does represent an association of neurosurgeons and many other health care professionals of critical relevance. In the context of the presentations in the UN Security Council and the European Academy of Paediatrics statement, GAPSBiF can do likewise as a global alliance. Such a statement would be consonant with the goal of GAPSBiF at the WHA. Ignoring or silence about the events in Ukraine are not desirable.
